For the love of halloween

Have you ever thought of why we love Halloween so much? This autumn ritual transforms our deepest fears into a celebration of embracing things we don’t understand or can’t explain. That exploration and acceptance of being able to say “I don’t know” is very freeing in a culture that is always demanding you to be your best with all the answers.

It dances in the realm of wild joy where you release all that closeted energy through makeup, gauzy clothing, crimped hair and eccentric jewelry. As in the words of Gillian Owens from Practical Magic, “We’re different and so are your girls.”

Halloween can be an outlet to express your fears and desires in a creative way that you wouldn’t normally feel comfortable exploring.

“My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being 'normal' is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage.”

-Aunt Frances, Practical Magic

Where does your Halloween spectrum fall? Did you sew costumes with your best friend from scraps? Have you always found Halloween to be frivolous?

My family has always loved dressing up for Halloween. Seriously, the masked skeleton in long black pants is my Great Grandpa Carl in his 90s. Like we LOVE Halloween and continue to celebrate it together at a Witch Party my Auntie Carla throws annually. Have a favorite Halloween tradition? I’d love to hear it.
